This week we have continued our very extensive study on Animal Adaptations in our Science and English curriculum. All students are beginning to develop a sincere curiosity about how the environment, and the animal kingdom are closely connected. We are attending an excursion to the Cairns Aquarium in a guided tour looking at how these adaptations are even reflected in sea life.
In RE we are completing a study of the Jewish people and understanding the reason for praying.
Our next study is in investigating the writers of the Bible.
Our school camp is looming closer. There has been some work done in preparing tent companions and it appears that everyone has a buddy with them. Further preparations are underway. Should you have any enquiries please has no hesitation in contacting your specific classroom teacher by email.
Class 6B
This term year 6 are learning about electrical energy. We will investigate, design and build simple parallel and series DC circuits and develop our understanding of the different ways in which electrical energy can be generated. In the past few days students have selected a method of electrical power generation to research and write about. Our HASS focus is on Australia’s democracy and the three levels of government (federal, state and local) in Australia. In maths we have been multiplying, adding and subtracting decimals and applying these skills to convert between metric units of measurement. Our literacy focus this term is persuasive writing. Students will be looking at a variety of school websites and critiquing the effectiveness of each website in promoting the school using a variety of criteria. We are certainly having a very busy term!

2026 Tuition Fees and Fee Discount Information
FEE & LEVY INFORMATION
School fees are made up of tuition fees which are set by Cairns Catholic Education, and the school’s levies.
Tuition Fees
Our school is part of an independent school system. The need to charge fees arises from the policy of governments to deliver significantly lower per capita grants to non-government schools than to state schools. Whilst this necessitates tuition fees and levies, it also ensures we can maintain some independence as a school system and achieve the ideals of the Catholic Church in our school organisation.
The schedule of tuition fees is set by Catholic Education Services.
The current schedule is at the link below.
Levies
School Levies are set and reviewed annually.
- Capital Levy (buildings and maintenance)
- P&F Fundraising Levy
- Resource Levy
- Activities Levy
Please contact accounts.gordonvale@cns.catholic.edu.au the school accounts department for current levies.
Discounts
Every attempt is made to make an education at St Michael’s affordable so that no Catholic child is denied a Catholic education because of financial difficulties. Parents are often pleasantly surprised at the affordability of Catholic Education in the Cairns Diocese, especially when compared with other non-government schools (private/independent), or Catholic schools in capital cities.
A sibling discount applies to families where more than one child is attending one or more Catholic schools in the Cairns Diocese.
Holders of a current means-tested Australian government health care or pensioner concession cards receive an automatic 70% discount on tuition fees (does not apply to school levies).
Families who are not concession card holders yet are experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to make a confidential request to the principal for special consideration. Please contact the school’s Finance Officer to arrange an appointment.
Unless prior arrangements have been put in place, failure to follow school policy and procedures may result in the engagement of a Debt Recovery Agency.
Please do not hesitate to contact accounts.gordonvale@cns.catholic.edu.au for any queries regards to payment plans, direct debits, financial hardship, concessions, or Centrepay.

Parenting Survey (external)
How are Australian parents doing right now?
It’s time to find out. The Parenting Today survey is a national survey that will bring together the voices of 10,000 parents – and you can add your voice to the mix. This is your chance to make sure families just like yours are represented. The survey will capture the experiences, strengths, and support needs of parents and carers across Australia.
If you are a parent or carer to a child aged 0-18, you are invited to participate and share your experience of what it is like to be a parent in 2025.

A Prayer for Mary MacKillop
Loving God,
We honor the life and legacy of Saint Mary MacKillop, a woman of deep faith and unwavering commitment to serving others. As we celebrate her feast day, we ask for her intercession and guidance in our daily lives.
Mary MacKillop, you showed us the power of compassion, resilience, and dedication. You faced challenges with courage and always trusted in God's providence. Help us to follow your example, to see Christ in every person we meet, and to serve with a generous heart.
May we be inspired by your spirit of humility and love, and may we strive to create a community where everyone is valued and supported. Grant us the strength to persevere in our work, the wisdom to make just decisions, and the grace to act with kindness and mercy.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
